North Invent collaborates with Thales on cutting-edge Iridium Certus® GMDSS maritime safety solution
North Invent AS, a privately held Norwegian based company that has been serving the Maritime Industry with displays and bridge equipment is proud to announce the collaboration with Thales Defense & Security, Inc. (Thales), a US based company that has been serving domestic and international Air, Land and Sea domains for over 60 years and supporting the Iridium Certus® L-band market since 2018, on the development of an Iridium Certus Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), intended for release in the second quarter of 2026.
Iridium Certus GMDSS is the only truly global maritime safety and security service that provides distress alert, safety voice, Maritime Safety Information (MSI), Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT), and Ship Security Alert System (SSAS). The Iridium Certus Connected Thales VesseLINK terminals will be able to deliver these capabilities along with the fastest weather-resilient broadband service for conducting ships’ business when other systems are blocked or unavailable – all through a single, versatile, and reliable antenna, giving fleets the ability to cut data costs and streamline their installed bridge unit equipment.
North Invent, a world-class manufacturer of maritime displays and bridge equipment, is adding a 10.1 inch touch screen computer to the Thales Iridium Certus 200 and Iridium Certus 700 service-based VesseLINK terminals to activate necessary GMDSS operations including software applications suitable for fisheries. With the new Thales WaveLINK* GMDSS terminal, North Invent will complete the most reliable GMDSS solution on the market, offering advanced connectivity and safety services to existing communication systems.
“Iridium Certus Thales VesseLINK terminals have been a reliable staple for maritime communications,” says Wouter Deknopper, vice president and general manager of maritime, Iridium. “The new Iridium Certus GMDSS terminals will now turbocharge this service offering, providing mariners with an extremely robust communication and safety maritime solution.”
Together, Thales and North Invent will provide this critical safety option for vessels around the world using Iridium’s constellation of 66 cross-linked L-band satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
“We are proud to be able to contribute to making life at sea a little safer. The certainty that someone will listen when in dire straits is fundamental at sea. To be able to partner with Thales to utilize the Iridium network to ensure safety on the high seas is an acknowledgment to our products quality and flexibility.” Øyvind Kalstø Johansen, CEO North Invent.
